FARMANCO primarily consults to
clients within Western Australia in what is locally termed the
"wheatbelt", from Geraldton in the north of the state to Esperance
in the south east, with some representation in grape growing
and pastoral regions.
A broad description of the agriculture in this region would be
"extensive dryland farming in a mediterranean climate". Wheat is
the predominant crop grown, but there are also significant areas of
other cereals, pulse crops and canola. Grazing of sheep on improved
pastures can be a major or minor component of the enterprise mix.
Just what enterprises can be employed is dependant on available
soil types and the rainfall received, both of which can vary
considerably over relatively short distances. Other stock
enterprises include cattle and pigs, sometimes in intensive
feedlots.
