January, February and March means the post-harvest review season for our Management Consultants. And it is like herding sheep getting articles out of anybody.
However, we hope you get value out of this month's articles. Supplied by Mae Connelly (team Grain Marketing) Eric Nankivell (team Management Consulting) and Brent Pritchard (team Agronomy). This month's articles include:
2024 / 25 WA Harvest Review
Mae Connelly (Grain Marketing Consultant)
The 2024/25 WA crop was the third biggest on record.
It was a lower protein season in WA, other than the Esperance port zone.
The malt percentage was below average, but enough malt was delivered to meet demand due to the large crop size.
The GM canola spread remained wide for fundamental reasons.
This article discusses the size and quality of the 2024/25 WA harvest, along with some pricing and seasonal issues, and comparisons to historical deliveries.
Seed Destructors in Wet Harvest Environments
Eric Nankivell (Management Consultant)
Seed destructors can be economically costly in high harvest weather risk environments.
Be sure to assess the trade-off costs of this technology.
Maybe adapting destructor use to the higher weed risk parts of the rotation can still maintain the benefits while reducing costs.
Developing destructor technology is moving toward optional use.
The adoption of seed destructing activities tend to be more successful when you have a relatively dry harvest environment.
Barley Varieties for 2025
Brent Pritchard (Agronomy Consultant)
New barley options are plentiful.
WA variety malting quality has reduced for international buyers.
Three new varieties to watch for malt accreditation in March 2025.
Be aware of barley scald no matter what the official rating.
There are several new varieties lined up for malt accreditation. We will have to wait until March to find out which of these will make the cut.
Currently covers labels for WA, VIC, NSW and SA.
