Pulses Check 2025: Prices, Trade and Volatility

Mae Connelly (Grain Marketing Consultant)

  • Global demand for pulses is strong, but markets remain volatile due to tariffs, freight and seasonal swings.

  • India is critical to Australian pulse exports.

  • Australia’s quality and flexibility give it an edge.

  • Freight disruptions and trade shifts are reshaping supply chains.

With trade shocks, shipping disruptions and patchy seasonal conditions, now is the perfect time to zoom out and take in the bigger picture of the global pulse market.

Irrigating Winter Crops in the Southern Riverina (NSW / VIC)

Eric Nankivell (Farm Management Consultant)

  • Over the long-term, winter crop irrigation has been quite profitable.

  • Winter crop irrigation is more profitable in dry years.

  • Margins have been challenged in the wetter-than-average last five years.

  • The strategy of watering up is currently being debated.

There are a number of key decisions to be made around irrigating winter crops. The aim of this article is to provide some discussion on the process and basic economics.

Understanding Macronutrient Delivery for Crop Health

Mark Lawrence (Agronomy Consultant)

  • Different micronutrient chemistries affect how they enter leaf tissue and their compatibility with other inputs.

  • When choosing a micronutrient formulation, it's essential to consider the specific application (soil or foliar), compatibility with other crop inputs, and the desired outcome in terms of yield and herbicide efficacy.

Micronutrients are essential for crop development. The effectiveness of their delivery can significantly influence plant uptake of the applied nutrient.

Header Multiples

Greg Easton (Farm Management Consultant)

  • Lower capacity harvesters can be more cost effective, when:

    • There is no technological advantage increasing work hours per day.

    • No additional chaser bins or grain handling infrastructure are required.

  • Timeliness/losses favour additional capacity (three smaller headers).

  • The rainfall zone you are in impacts options.

  • Be sure to consider whether the business can handle a higher level of investment risk.

With the newer headers getting about, there has been plenty of discussion with clients about the pros and cons of whether to run two higher capacity machines, or three smaller capacity machines.
